Abstract

Giorgi Mercule, back in the 10th century, said: “A vast country is considered to be Georgia, in which the time is sacrificed and every prayer is performed in the Georgian language.” This definition expresses the territorial, linguistic and religious identity of Georgia.

The first determinant of identity in this triad is the country, the territorial identity. The country in Georgian means the land. “A vast country” is the unity and unity of lands; that is, territorial identity is the basis of national self-awareness and, accordingly, statehood.
